Chapter Twenty-Eight

Numbly walking beside Ethan, Izzy tried to recall how her day had begun. It felt like a very long time ago she’d screwed up roast potatoes whilst worrying about her impending talk with him.

When a black cab pulled up, Ethan finally broke the silence between them.

"Look, Izzy. Take some time and consider what you want to do with the Chang situation," he said, opening the door for her.

Wrapping her arms around herself to ward off the chill, the night's earlier drizzle had stopped and the skies were now clear. Above, a waxing moon rose. In a matter of days it would be full.

"Are you questioning my commitment about bringing those responsible for Bob’s murder to justice?" she asked, a bit tartly for Ethan's liking.

"No. I don't believe I said anything of the sort."

Izzy's prickly side backed down a notch. She was being a tad sensitive.

"I'm sorry, that was uncalled for. Would you like me in at four tomorrow as well... to prep for our assignment?"

The moment it left her mouth, Izzy remembered her standing appointment with Dr. Shelley was scheduled for five. If there was a silver lining to being Mrs. Lang again, it would be an end to her therapy sessions.

Mrs. Ethan B. wouldn't be requiring any. She was, after all, still in the honeymoon phase of married life.

Inwardly, Ethan cursed. He too had an appointment with his shrink. He'd be wrapping that up right quick. His time with Dr. Radcliffe had been one of his oddest experiences since rejoining the Yard. The man truly was a strange duck.

Although... ever since he'd been going to therapy, Ethan had never slept better in his life.

"Seven’s fine," he replied. " And if Harry has an update about Ida Wainwright's footage, I'd appreciate it being emailed to me. Probably best you send me the details. I get the impression he doesn't care for me all that much."

Izzy said nothing either way about Harry's opinion of Ethan. Why rock the boat? And apparently, like women, men had a way of reading their own sex's body language. Harry hadn't said a word yet Ethan knew where he stood.

"Yes, of course. I'll send it as soon as I get it. Anything else?"

There were a million 'anything elses' he wanted to ask but didn't. As it was, they were testing the cabbie's patience. Plus, Izzy was obviously freezing.

"Wear my coat home. You can bring it back tomorrow," he said, putting it over her shoulders. "I want you to give some serious consideration about me finding a reason for your bowing out of No.77 duty."

Seeing she was about to naysay him again, Ethan didn't let her voice her opposition. "You have until your departure on Wednesday to give me an answer. As for our talk, it needs to be put on ice... for now."

Izzy bit her lip as she slipped her arms into the coat. After her night, she didn't have the energy to fight with Ethan anymore.

"Okay. I'll give what you said some thought. Good night, Inspector," she said, before turning to get inside the cab.
